Aguayo mask

Aguayo fabrics of alpaca, llama, and sheep wool are handwoven by Indigenous Andean artisans, normally women. Worn as mantles and shawls, they are used to carry items and infants on one’s back. Many Bolivians began wearing protective masks in March 2020 as virus rates increased. With a wide-spread mask shortage, indigenous women began using their aguayo weaving skills to make masks, generating additional income and raising public awareness of their culture. The masks are biodegradable, warm and decorated with stripes and geometric designs.
