Clothing the Pandemic

A Virtual Exhibition of COVID-19 Face Masks from Around the World

Courage mask

Performing artists have struggled during the pandemic. In August 2020, Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, announced that “by popular demand and sad necessity we want to introduce the new Courage Mask.” Proceeds went to the Unison Benevolent Fund for Canadian musicians and crew. The mask resonated with fans who snapped up the first run in a week from the band’s online store. Courage is the title of one their most famous songs, written in 1993, and dedicated to writer, Hugh MacLennan, who was instrumental in defining Canadian literature.
