Clothing the Pandemic

A Virtual Exhibition of COVID-19 Face Masks from Around the World

Ikat mask by Kiyyangan Weavers Association

This mask from Kiangan, Ifugao, is embellished using the ikat technique. Locally the technique is called binobodan, which is produced through the tie-and-dye method. This mask was made by the Kiyyangan Weavers Association, where elderly weavers teach apprentices on traditional handloom weaving. When the pandemic struck, the weavers produced facemasks to distribute to their own communities, and eventually some of these masks have been sold online to help the local weavers affected by the lockdown.
