Mask embroidered in Abra style
This comes from the first lot of embroidered masks made by the Revival Dye association in the Itneg community in Peñarrubia, Abra. The Itneg are known for their embroidery with lizards, fingers, rice and stars that serve as traditional symbols of good luck and abundance. However, in 2020 their traditional source of income from weaving was disrupted. During the lockdown, young children, mothers and their husbands made face masks from the rolls of unsold fabric which were sold online and reached Baguio City through the artisans’ fair organized by the University of the Philippines Baguio. These masks had become popular, as the entire community already were engaged in the making of these facemasks as a source of income.
