Clothing the Pandemic

A Virtual Exhibition of COVID-19 Face Masks from Around the World

Anti Anti Asian Mask

This mask was created by Korean New Zealand artist Hanna Shim during the country’s nationwide Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. Addressing racism with wit and humour, Shim sold this ‘special edition’ creation and other simpler masks to raise funds for the domestic violence charity, Shine, transforming anti-Asian hate into kindness in the process. The ‘Anti Anti Asian’ mask was ultimately purchased by Saera Chun, who says it ‘became a perfect memento of the fast-changing COVID-19 era for me. Also, it reflects the reluctant activist in me. Confronting racism in person used to be much easier when I was 13 years old and just embarked on the journey.’
